Manuscripts

A manuscript is a handwritten composition on paper, bark, cloth, metal, palm leaf or any other material dating back at least seventy-five years that has significant scientific, historical or aesthetic value. Lithographs and printed volumes are not manuscripts. Manuscripts are found in hundreds of different languages and scripts. Often, one language is written in a number of different scripts. For example, Sanskrit is written in Oriya script, Grantha script, Devanagari script and many other scripts.

Manuscripts are distinct from historical records such as epigraphs on rocks, firmans, revenue records which provide direct information on events or processes in history. Manuscripts have knowledge content.

The main objective of the Department is to locate and identify Manuscripts collections in the region through exhaustive survey, acquire and document them through descriptive catalogue, facilitate conservation and preservation and promote ready access to these Manuscripts through digitization and publication. Considering the abundance of Manuscripts in all part of the Hisar region the Department has successfully collected hundreds of Manuscripts by donation.

In Hisar Archives there are 563 manuscripts on Ayurveda, Ved, Puran, Tantra-Mantra sastra, Palmistry, Kavya, Sanskrit Vyakaran, Tark Shastra and on Haryanavi literature such as Bhajan, Geet and play etc. The earliest manuscript in Hisar Archives is Karm Vipak dates back to Sambat 1599. Some of the important and rare manuscripts are Prabodh Chandroday Sambat 1774, Ved Vedank Sambat 1777, Kashi Mahatmya Sambat 1805, Vrishti Yog Vidhi Sambat 1770, Nyaya Bodhini Sambat 1842 and Dharma Shastra by Parasar dated Sambat 1896. Besides this there are number of published manuscripts on Ayurveda & Religion. All these manuscripts are in Sanskrit Language and there script is Devnagri. The manuscripts are collected by way of donation. The names of some of the individual donors of manuscripts are as under:-
